Ireland Central’s Fascinating Piece on Operations at Donegal Airport

US tourists heading to Donegal can opt for a scenic flight from Dublin Airport rather than enduring a lengthy four-hour drive, advised Pauline Sweeney, the marketing manager at Donegal Airport. The Dublin-Donegal route, now thriving after the pandemic, connects to Aer Lingus’ extensive network, offering through fares to 14 US airports. Sweeney noted an increase in US tourists, particularly after college football games, who explored Donegal as an extension of their Dublin trip, attracted by the 45-minute flight showcasing Donegal’s stunning coastline. Donegal Airport, consistently voted the world’s most scenic airport, enjoys the benefits of this positive recognition.

For Americans connecting through Dublin, Sweeney assured that their baggage would be checked through, and car rental options like Enterprise and Yuko Toyota Car Club are available at Donegal Airport. The airport collaborates with local businesses, offering package deals that include flights, car rentals, and accommodation, promoting both the county and the airport.

Donegal Airport, in operation since 1996, has fostered new enterprises, like Carrickfinn Watersports, providing unique experiences such as surf sessions and kayak tours. The airport also operates a Donegal-Glasgow route seasonally, with hopes of making it year-round in the future.

Although Donegal Airport accommodates only small aircraft, it conveniently connects to Aer Lingus’ broader network in Dublin, facilitating travel to Europe and the US. Emerald Airlines reported a 13% increase in passengers on the Dublin-Donegal route compared to the previous year, catering to both leisure and business travelers, including those attending medical appointments.
